IRS & state letters
Got a letter from the IRS?
Don't panic, and don't ignore it. Most letters can be resolved quickly when they're answered on time. Find your notice below, then send it to us securely and we'll tell you exactly what to do.
Find your notice
The notice number is in the top or bottom right corner of the letter, for example CP2000 or Letter 5071C.
Is it really from the IRS?
- The IRS almost always contacts you first by mail, not by text, email, social media or a surprise phone call.
- The IRS never asks for payment by gift card, crypto, Zelle or wire transfer to a person, and never threatens immediate arrest.
- Not sure? Log in to your account at irs.gov/account (type it yourself) or send us the letter and we'll check it.
